Meet a Typical Brit in Toronto: Sam Roulston.

Sam Roulston Headshot

Sam Roulston was born in Poole, Dorset and grew up in Southampton. In 2009 he moved to Canada to attend The University of Toronto for a Communication Studies degree. Towards the end of his studies he found himself focusing a lot more of his energy into passions that weren’t necessarily heading in a corporate direction.

Sam started taking classes at The Second City Training Centre in Toronto where he found a love for improv and sketch comedy. He quickly joined an in-house sketch troupe called
The Naked Friday Players where he was thrown in at the deep-end having to write and perform weekly sketch comedy. Sam went on to complete The Improvisation Conservatory program at The Second City Training Centre as well as training at The Bad Dog Theatre Company.

Sam now works at The Second City Training Centre as a Student Services Representative. He finds great joy in helping new comedians find their path in the comedy community. Sam also produces a number of comedy shows in Toronto and performs all around the Greater Toronto Area. He also recently got back from teaching and performing as part of
Oi! Craic! Eh? at Improv Fest, Ireland.

Sam’s greatest pride and joy is a show he produces called
The Expat Show. It is a monthly improv show at The Bad Dog Theatre that showcases some of the finest non-Canadian talent living in Toronto. Every month there is a different ensemble of eight improvisers, which makes for an interesting and diverse show every time. Each performer brings their own perspective of the world, cultural background and life experiences to the table. Everything in the show is made up on the spot based on audience suggestions. There is a small but mighty community of British expat comedians living in Toronto at the moment. Sam aims to bring them all together for The Expat Show in June for a one-off Queen’s Birthday Celebration show.

Sam performs whenever and wherever he can, mostly at The Comedy Bar, The Bad Dog Theatre, The Second City Training Centre or The Social Capital Theatre.
